Extended Standards

Extended Wyoming Academic Content Standards and Academic Benchmarks

The grade-level, extended Wyoming Academic Content Standards and Academic Benchmarks define the essential knowledge and skills that allow students with the most significant cognitive disabilities to achieve high academic expectations and to access the general academic curriculum. These standards provide a common set of goals and expectations for all students with the most significant cognitive disabilities in Wyoming. They provide a consistent framework for challenging instruction to promote access to the general education curriculum.

The extended Academic Benchmarks are linked to the grade-level Wyoming Content and Performance Standards. They define the competencies, skills, and knowledge that students with the most significant cognitive disabilities need to know and be able to do. Grades kindergarten through eighth and grade eleven are specified in order to promote access to the general education standards and participation in rigorous levels of instruction aligned to the Wyoming Academic Content Standards and Academic Benchmarks to support individual student growth.

Instructional opportunities addressing the extended Wyoming Academic Content Standards and Academic Benchmarks, combined with instructional supportive assessments with clear targets, enable all students to achieve high standards of academic performance. The basis of the extended Wyoming Academic Content Standards is to provide a framework for instruction of students with the most significant cognitive disabilities and to assist school districts, schools, and communities in developing and strengthening curriculum, rather than prescribing courses, materials, or instructional methodology. They specify the essential learning all students must master. Teachers ensure that students achieve mastery by using a wide range of instructional strategies, accommodations, assistive technology using adapted, grade-level appropriate materials, based on a student’s individual learning characteristics and present levels of performance.
