01-29-2024 School Counselors Can Positively Impact School Performance Data

After analyzing the 2022-23 school performance data, the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) identified 1,128 students without a Hathaway Success Curriculum Level. A Hathaway Success Curriculum Level, reported on the WDE950 senior transcript, is required for a student to be deemed college ready in federal and state accountability and can also be an indicator of military readiness. The success curriculum level is based on the courses taken and does not include a student’s ACT score or GPA.

Beginning with the 2023-24 SY, the WDE will collect Hathaway subject areas at the student course level on the WDE949 and WDE950 Student Transcripts collections. While most courses fulfill only one Hathaway subject area, some districts have courses approved for more than one. In these instances, district staff must adjust the Hathaway subject area on the student transcript if the default does not apply. The WDE will verify the Hathaway subject codes reported on all WDE949 and WDE950 transcripts for all courses reported as Hathaway courses on the WDE638 for the 2023-24 SY in this year’s accountability calculations.

Infinite Campus accommodated this change in the January 2024 release. District Student Information System administrators or Hathaway Coordinators will select a Hathaway Subject Area default for each course. For exceptions where the default does not apply, a school counselor must add the Hathaway Subject Override on the Section Student Detail page.

PowerSchool allows district Student Information System administrators to select a Hathaway Subject Area default for each course. The default subject code is chosen in the dropdown labeled Scholarship Course Indicator on a course’s Wyoming State Information section. The default subject codes can be overridden on a student’s Historical Grades. Each grade has a Scholarship Course Indicator dropdown that can be used to choose a different subject code than the default. If left blank, the subject code will be the default value from the grade’s course.

Districts will not be required to update prior year courses with Hathaway Subject Codes. When four years of data is collected, the WDE will use the course information to verify Hathaway Curriculum Levels.

As students transfer in, registrars must select the appropriate Hathaway subject code for courses taken at other schools. Codes are:

  • ART – Fine Arts (FA)
  • CTE – Career and Technical (CTE)
  • ELA – English (ELA)
  • FLA – Foreign Language

  • MA2 – Algebra II
