The Wyoming Department of Education encourages teachers to share information about the American Legion Constitution Oratorical Contest with their students. This is an incredible opportunity for students to earn scholarship money and compete on a national level while learning about the history of our nation’s laws, gaining the ability to think and speak clearly, and developing an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights, and privileges of American citizenship. Students begin by competing at the local post level. Post winners advance to the district level.  District winners advance to the state level, and then the state winner attends the national competition. Students can begin competing in ninth grade and continue every year until they are a national winner.

There are two categories:

  • Prepared Speech: A topic chosen by the student on any aspect of the Constitution.
  • Assigned Speech: At each competition, one of the four amendments that are assigned for the competition that year will be ‘drawn from a hat’ for the competitors to speak on. Students will have time to prepare for each subject before the competition.
