The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) announces a new Place-Based Education Microcredential for educators ready to take the classrooms beyond four walls and utilize the local environment as a teaching tool. This isn’t just another professional development course; it’s a journey from the digital classroom to the heart of Grand Teton National Park. Register by June 20.
This comprehensive hybrid learning experience is delivered by Teton Science Schools (TSS):
Step 1: Online Cohort (Asynchronous, June 22–August 7)
Start with a virtual course to master the fundamentals. Connect with fellow educators to explore core principles and design a starter lesson to implement immediately.
Step 2: In-Person Workshop (November 4–8)
A 5-day immersive workshop in the Tetons:
- Experience place-based learning firsthand in one of the world’s most stunning classrooms.
- Collaborate with peers to build a full unit or community-focused project.
- Align place-based learning with standards and curriculum requirements.
Step 3: Real-World Impact
Leave with a concrete plan to engage students with the local environment and community for the 2026-27 school year.
Educators should consult with administrators on the use of Title II funds for fees. Total cost includes a $299 online course fee and a $2,276 registration for the five-day, four-night workshop at Teton Science Schools—a comprehensive rate that covers all programming, lodging, and meals.
The microcredential is free of charge, but University of Wyoming credits will cost an extra $60 per credit.
The Place-Based Education Microcredential was developed in collaboration between the WDE and TSS, exemplifying each entity’s efforts to expand and support outdoor and place-based learning opportunities across Wyoming.
