Social Studies K A

In this course, the student will learn, practice, and apply the knowledge and skills that provide the foundation to grow into engaged citizens. The student will explore social studies content across themes of civics, economics, geography, and history. Early in the semester, the student will learn about weather, the seasons, and Earth’s resources, and how these affect our daily lives. Later, the course expands into study about landforms, maps, and map tools. Two multi-day Portfolio projects provide opportunities for students to apply their new Social Studies skills to solve age-appropriate real-world problems about making maps and taking action to solve a problem in their communities. Along the way, some instruction is presented using a Peer Model approach, in which the student views a video of a peer learning how to use and apply target social studies content and skills. Other instruction emphasizes 21st Century Skills to support student proficiency in the skills, knowledge, and expertise they must master to succeed in life and eventually the workplace. Together, the course elements ensure that the student grows as a responsible member of civic life, both in thought and action.
