Wyoming homeschool law can be found in WY Stat § 21-4-102, under the definitions regarding compulsory attendance of Wyoming students.

Every parent, guardian or other person having control or charge of any child who is a resident of this state and whose seventh birthday falls on or before August 1, or September 15 if the child started kindergarten pursuant to an approved request under W.S. 21-3-110(a)(xxxviii), of any year and who has not yet attained his sixteenth birthday or completed the tenth grade shall be required to ensure that the child is enrolled in a private school, public school, or home-based educational program.

A home-based educational program (homeschool) shall meet the requirements of a basic academic educational program pursuant to W.S. 21-4-101(a)(vi). A home-based educational program means a program of educational instruction provided to a child by the child’s parent or legal guardian or by a person designated by the parent or legal guardian.

It shall be the responsibility of every person administering a home-based educational program to:

  • To ensure that a curriculum is administered to the pupils in this program that complies with the requirements of a “basic academic educational program,” defined as one that provides a sequentially progressive curriculum of fundamental instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, civics, history, literature and science. Per HB 46, effective July 1, 2025, the homeschooling entity is no longer required to submit this curriculum to the local school district.
  • Shall meet in person with a school district counselor or administrator to provide the school district with written consent to the withdrawal of that child from school attendance.  If the student has never attended public school in the district, this registration is not required.

Things to take into account when considering homeschooling are:

  • Wyoming does not issue a diploma to any student who attends a private school, private-religious school, or homeschool. They may receive a certificate of completion, a transcript, or a diploma from the school or program they completed, however it will not be from the state of Wyoming or a public school district. It may be advisable to take a GED or HiSET exam to prove public high school equivalency.
  • Any high school student (9-12) may benefit from contacting a Hathaway Scholarship advisor that can help them ensure eligibility to receive the Hathaway Scholarship to the University of Wyoming.
