CHEYENNE – The Wyoming Department of Education is accepting applications for non-profit organizations seeking to participate as qualified Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) under the Federal K-12 Education Tax Credit Program.
“Wyoming families want educational options that work for their children, whether that means additional tutoring, learning materials, or help with tuition,” Governor Mark Gordon said. “This program gives individuals a direct way to invest in those opportunities. I encourage qualified organizations to apply and help Wyoming families make the most of this new resource.”
President Donald Trump established the Education Freedom Tax Credit through the Working Families Tax Cuts Act. Beginning January 1, 2027, individual taxpayers may contribute to an approved K-12 Scholarship Granting Organization, or SGO, and receive a dollar-for-dollar federal income tax credit of up to $1,700 each year. Through this program, participating SGOs will receive tax credit-eligible contributions to distribute educational scholarships directly to eligible Wyoming K-12 students. Students can use these scholarships for tuition, tutoring, instructional materials, and other qualifying educational expenses.
“Every child in Wyoming deserves access to an education that best fits their unique needs and helps them reach their full potential,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder. “By opening applications for Scholarship Granting Organizations under this federal program, we are taking another important step toward empowering parents and expanding educational opportunities across our state.”
To participate, non-profit organizations must meet federal and state requirements and submit an official application demonstrating their ability to manage scholarship funds, maintain transparent financial reporting, and effectively serve Wyoming students.
The SGO cannot collect funds until the application is approved. The WDE will review applications and provide recommendations to the Governor’s office for final approval. To receive approval for the 2027 tax year, applications must be submitted by December 1, 2026. The annual SGO list will be posted to the website beginning in January 2027.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply early to ensure they are designated before the start of the upcoming tax year.
