CHEYENNE – The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE), in collaboration with Central Wyoming College, successfully concluded the 2026 Native American Education Conference, held August 12–13 in Riverton. Under the theme “Walking Together: Forging a Collective Path through Indigenous Knowledge,” the 17th annual event welcomed more than 600 attendees, including educators, tribal leaders, and community partners.
“The Native American Education Conference remains a testament to the power of partnership. By walking together and honoring Indigenous knowledge, we are not just preserving history; we are forging a path toward a stronger future for every student in Wyoming,” said Superintendent Megan Degenfelder.
The conference provided a vital platform for advancing Indigenous education and language revitalization. “The impact of this conference is significant in creating awareness of contemporary Indigenous issues and fostering solutions for Indigenous futures,” stated a participant.
This year’s gathering emphasized the importance of raising awareness of contemporary Indigenous issues while fostering sustainable solutions for the future. Participants noted that the event represents a premier professional development opportunity and exemplifies the successful collaboration between the WDE and tribal communities.
Significant highlights included inspiring keynotes from Rose Ann Abrahamson and Dr. Jason Cummins, complemented by screenings of the acclaimed films Generation Warrior and Before Wyoming: The West in 1776. Academic excellence was celebrated during the annual Pacesetter Awards Ceremony, which recognized Indigenous students for their outstanding leadership and achievements. The event showcased curriculum innovation through breakout tracks on integrating artificial intelligence into Indigenous history and on project-based learning models. Cultural preservation remained a central focus, with sessions dedicated to Native language technology, traditional food in schools, and support systems for Native American students.
