This course provides the foundation for the student to grow into a successful scientific thinker through instruction in disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. Units present core ideas in an expanding view, starting with the basics of discerning living from nonliving and the needs of living things. This foundation expands into a study of plants and animals, including how they grow, followed by a study of the environment. The student will then explore patterns in the changing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. The semester ends with a study of sunlight and its effects on Earth. Science and engineering practices are encouraged through inquiry prompts for a science journal, as well as two multi-day portfolio items that provide opportunities to think like an engineer while solving real-world problems about building a habitat and keeping cool. Throughout the course, some instruction is presented with videos in which the student will observe a peer of similar age learning how to use and apply science content and skills. Other instruction emphasizes 21st century skills through crosscutting connections, real-world data, tools, and experts the student may encounter in future learning, in the workforce, and in life. Together, the course elements ensure that the student will grow as a scientist, both in thought and action.
