In Math K B, students extend their number sense by reading, writing, and counting numbers forward to 100—and backward within 20. They will also group by tens and use ten frames to make and take apart teen numbers. They strengthen addition and subtraction within 10 by using counting strategies, breaking apart numbers, making 10, relating facts, working with 0, and solving word problems. Students also classify and sort data; read picture graphs and Venn diagrams; explore three-dimensional shapes by describing solids and their faces and using positional words; and build measurement understanding of length, height, width, weight, area, volume, and capacity. Concepts are developed through mathematical processes, such as problem-solving, communicating, representing, and making connections. By building both conceptual knowledge and procedural fluency, students strengthen their mathematical thinking and are better equipped to solve a variety of real-world problems. Portfolios in this course encourage students to explore and apply their understanding and creativity by developing original products that demonstrate mastery of targeted skills.
