In Math 5 B, students will extend their number sense to decimals by relating decimals and fractions; reading, writing, comparing, and rounding decimals; and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals using models, patterns, and estimation. They will convert units within the customary and metric systems, convert units of time, create and interpret line plots, and solve multi-step measurement and data problems. Students will also use the coordinate plane to graph and analyze data and patterns and classify two-dimensional figures, including polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals, by their properties and relationships. Concepts are developed through mathematical processes, such as problem-solving, communicating, representing, and making connections. By building both conceptual knowledge and procedural fluency, students strengthen their mathematical thinking and are better equipped to solve a variety of real-world problems. Portfolios in this course encourage students to explore and apply their understanding and creativity by developing original products that demonstrate mastery of targeted skills.
