In Math 5 A, students will deepen their understanding of whole numbers by exploring place-value relationships and patterns, estimating products and quotients, and multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers using strategies, such as area models and partial quotients. They will evaluate, write, and interpret numerical expressions and represent and solve multi-step word problems. Students will also study the volume of rectangular prisms and compound figures using formulas. They will extend their work with fractions by estimating, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers using models, number lines, and least common denominators and interpreting fractions as division and multiplication as scaling. Concepts are developed through mathematical processes, such as problem-solving, communicating, representing, and making connections. By building both conceptual knowledge and procedural fluency, students strengthen their mathematical thinking and are better equipped to solve a variety of real-world problems. Portfolios in this course encourage students to explore and apply their understanding and creativity by developing original products that demonstrate mastery of targeted skills.
