In Math 4 B, students will expand their understanding of fractions by learning to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers and to multiply fractions and whole numbers. They will create and interpret line plots and use them to solve real-world questions. Students will work with measurement by converting within metric and customary units, solving problems involving time, length, mass, and volume. The course introduces decimals, connecting them to fractions and money, and includes comparing, adding, and subtracting decimals. Finally, students will explore geometry concepts, such as measuring and drawing angles; classifying shapes; and identifying lines, symmetry, and properties of polygons. Concepts are developed through mathematical processes, such as problem-solving, communicating, representing, and making connections. By building both conceptual knowledge and procedural fluency, students strengthen their mathematical thinking and are better equipped to solve a variety of real-world problems. Portfolios in this course encourage students to explore and apply their understanding and creativity by developing original products that demonstrate mastery of targeted skills.
