In Math 2 B, students deepen place value understanding to 1,000 by reading, writing, and expanding numbers; counting and skip counting; and comparing and ordering three-digit numbers. They add and subtract within 1,000 using number lines, place-value charts, regrouping, and the standard algorithm, and solve problems involving money with coins and bills while telling and comparing time to the nearest five minutes using a.m. and p.m. Students also collect, represent, and interpret data with picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots, and explore geometry and fractions by identifying, drawing, and sorting 2-D and 3-D shapes and partitioning shapes into equal parts named halves, thirds, and fourths. Concepts are developed through mathematical processes, such as problem-solving, communicating, representing, and making connections. By building both conceptual knowledge and procedural fluency, students strengthen their mathematical thinking and are better equipped to solve a variety of real-world problems. Portfolios in this course encourage students to explore and apply their understanding and creativity by developing original products that demonstrate mastery of targeted skills.
