In Math 2 A, students build fluency with addition and subtraction within 20 and extend to 100 using strategies, such as counting on and back, making 10, breaking apart numbers, compensation, place-value charts, and the standard algorithm. They identify even and odd numbers, model equal groups with arrays, partition rectangles, and connect repeated addition to word problems. They will also work with equations, including adding three and four numbers. Students also develop measurement skills by selecting appropriate tools; building and using rulers; measuring in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters; and solving measurement word problems. Concepts are developed through mathematical processes, such as problem-solving, communicating, representing, and making connections. By building both conceptual knowledge and procedural fluency, students strengthen their mathematical thinking and are better equipped to solve a variety of real-world problems. Portfolios in this course encourage students to explore and apply their understanding and creativity by developing original products that demonstrate mastery of targeted skills.
