In Math 1 B, students expand measurement skills by ordering and measuring lengths; telling time to the hour and half hour; identifying coin names and values; and representing and interpreting data with picture graphs, tally charts, and tables. They count to 120 by ones, fives, and tens; build and break apart two-digit numbers to understand tens and ones; compare numbers and find 10 more or less; and add and subtract within 100 using hundred charts, place-value models, and word problems. Students also explore 2D and 3D geometry by describing, identifying, sorting, building, and composing shapes and learn to partition shapes into equal parts, including halves and fourths. Concepts are developed through mathematical processes, such as problem-solving, communicating, representing, and making connections. By building both conceptual knowledge and procedural fluency, students strengthen their mathematical thinking and are better equipped to solve a variety of real-world problems. Portfolios in this course encourage students to explore and apply their understanding and creativity by developing original products that demonstrate mastery of targeted skills.
