In Math 1 A, students strengthen their addition and subtraction skills—using the strategies of counting on and back, doubles and near doubles, making 10, adding 10, and adding three numbers—to build fluency within 10 and 20. They will solve a variety of word problems and use ten-frames, number lines, and equations to represent their thinking. Students also develop understanding of the equal sign by completing number sentences and making true equations. Concepts are developed through mathematical processes, such as problem-solving, communicating, representing, and making connections. By building both conceptual knowledge and procedural fluency, students strengthen their mathematical thinking and are better equipped to solve a variety of real-world problems. Portfolios in this course encourage students to explore and apply their understanding and creativity by developing original products that demonstrate mastery of targeted skills.
