Welcome to Kindergarten Language Arts! This course is designed to help students learn, practice, and apply the foundational skills needed to become confident readers, writers, and communicators. Instruction is closely aligned to state standards and emphasizes early literacy development through systematic, explicit teaching of phonics, spelling, high-frequency words, and foundational writing skills.
Daily instruction in phonics, decoding, and word recognition—including sight words—serves as a critical foundation for reading fluency. Integrated routines and scaffolded practice help students connect sounds to letters, recognize patterns in words, and apply these skills in authentic reading and writing experiences.
Throughout the course, students engage with a wide variety of literary and informational texts. Core reading instruction provides opportunities for students to listen to texts, read collaboratively, and begin reading independently, supporting the development of comprehension and early analysis skills. Lessons integrate speaking and listening experiences that encourage students to express ideas, build vocabulary, and participate in meaningful discussions.
Writing instruction supports emergent writers as they learn to dictate and write narrative and informational texts. Students are guided through a developmentally appropriate writing process that includes planning, drafting, and sharing their work, while also building fine motor skills through handwriting practice of uppercase and lowercase letters.
Together, the course components foster curiosity, confidence, and a love of language while supporting students’ growth as readers, writers, speakers, and listeners in a supportive and engaging learning environment.
