American Literary Studies is a chronological survey of American authors and their literary works. The course covers American writers their philosophies and their times from the Puritans to the post-World War II era. There is also required reading to be done outside of class. The course focuses heavily on analytical reading writing and discussion of the literature with the six traits model of writing used to evaluate writing. There is also emphasis on vocabulary and grammar studies. This course analyzes more material and does so more deeply than the regular American Literature course. The course covers a broader range of material including more work in the area of novels and poetry with more writing requiring analyses and syntheses than the regular American Literary Studies course.
