English Language Arts I introduces students to elements of literature from classic to modern times using the genres of fiction and nonfiction. Through reading and the study of literary elements, such as plot and setting, character, narrator and voice, tone and mood, and symbolism and irony, students develop skills in literary analysis and interpretation. Students also examine form, style, and persuasion within nonfiction works. In this course, students strengthen their vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. They also focus on the stages of the writing process.
