This course offers a comprehensive literacy program integrating phonics, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and handwriting. Students build comprehension and vocabulary while developing a love of reading. Thematic units use focus texts to guide instruction in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and more. Learning combines teacher-led lessons and independent practice. In the second semester, students write using the writing process and complete grammar activities. Spelling begins mid-year, and handwriting instruction helps students print letters accurately.
