4th Grade Language Arts B
Students begin the year identifying, describing, and using elements of a memoir, both in reading and writing. Students will begin to explore the issues of individual identity, and connections to family and the wider community. Students review the writing process and engage in an extended writing project, exploring their own sense of identity and personal values. Students read selected poems as they learn about literary techniques used in that poetry, such as figurative language, rhyme schemes, metaphor, and repetition. Students learn and use specific vocabulary associated with poetry, including stanza, line, free verse, and narrative poem. In this course, students learn to distinguish poetry from prose and write their own poetry. Students also develop reading and writing skills through engagement with informational texts. Lessons include explicit instruction in grammar, morphology, and spelling.
