Threat assessment is a problem-solving approach to violence prevention that involves assessment and intervention with students who have threatened violence in some way. The goal is to prevent violence by resolving conflicts and problems that underlie threatening behavior.

In 2021, the Safe Student Alliance was formed by the Wyoming Department of Education and funded by the STOP School Violence Project grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. The alliance was developed in partnership with BOCES 5, Wyoming Safe2Tell, and the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police.

The Safe Student Alliance began training Wyoming school districts in the Fall of 2021 on the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines Model and will continue to provide  no-cost training to districts in the 2023-2024 school year. In an effort to collect information on interest and training outcomes, the WDE asks that each district designate one representative to complete the threat assessment interest survey by June 5, 2023.
