This course provides the foundation for the student to grow into a successful scientific thinker through instruction in disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. Units present core ideas starting with physical science topics. First, the basics of force and motion are studied using tangible pushes and pulls. A unit about energy looks at forms the student can readily observe: heat, light, and sound. Physical science ends with an investigation into the fundamental properties of matter. The semester ends with a study of weather and its effects on people and Earth. Science and engineering practices are encouraged through inquiry prompts for a science journal. In addition, one multi-day portfolio item provides an opportunity to think like an engineer while solving a real-world problem using pushes and pulls. In a second multi-day portfolio item, the student will think like a scientist to investigate changing matter. Throughout the course, some instruction is presented with videos in which the student will observe a peer of similar age learning how to use and apply science content and skills. Other instruction emphasizes 21st century skills through crosscutting connections, real-world data, tools, and experts the student may encounter in future learning, the workforce, and in life. Together, the course elements ensure that the student will grow as a scientist, both in thought and action.
