Natrona County School District Moving Forward with Pre-Apprenticeship Programs

Theresa Fountain, Career Selection Facilitator with Natrona County School District #1, has worked tirelessly over the past couple of years in partnership with the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) to develop a summer Independent Study/Pre-Apprenticeship Electrical program for Casper high school students.

In Summer 2015, three students were selected to participate in the program after undergoing an interview and qualification process. Upon entrance into the program, the students participated in a one-week orientation at the JATC and a 10 hour OSHA Certification course (paid for by the JATC). The students were then placed at three different local companies: ITC, Modern Electric and Automation Electronics. Each student was paid $10.00/hour and earned .5 elective credits for every 60 hours completed in the program. The students learned everything from underground installations to security systems installation, not to mention the understanding they gained about industry expectations, work ethic, and career opportunities in the field. One student will transition from school to a full electrical apprenticeship in December of this year.

The Summer Independent Study/Electrical Pre-Apprenticeship Program will continue in the summer of 2016. Ms. Fountain plans to develop similar programs in other areas, such as plumbing and carpentry, in the future.
