The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) invites you to participate in Hour of Code during Computer Science Education week in K-12 schools across Wyoming December 4-10,2017. Hour of Code, is a global movement reaching over 100 million students in more than 180 countries with a focus of expanding access to computer science and coding lessons. We encourage participating schools to publicize their Hour of Code events through local and social media outlets and invite community members to join in their efforts. The WDE also encourages parents, teachers and students to share pictures of their events on social media with the hashtag #wyocode.
In support of this opportunity, the WDE is requesting Governor Matt Mead sign a “Computer Science Education Week Proclamation” encouraging all Wyoming schools to use one uninterrupted hour of class time for students to focus on coding. All staff throughout the WDE will also be participating in Hour of Code. All schools participating in the Hour of Code will receive a signed certification of participation signed by the Governor and Superintendent Balow and all schools achieving 100% participation in their registered events will be entered to win one of five $500.00 prizes to be used to purchase technology for their schools!
The WDE is encouraging schools to register Hour of Code events on the code.org website and host a Family Code Night this year. “Family Code Night” is a whole-school, whole-family event at which kids grades K-5 and their parents do their first hour of computer programming – together! At this special evening of learning and fun, you’ll play in parent-child teams to complete fun Code.org puzzles and challenges at your own pace, and learn core concepts in coding in this very first hour. Afterwards, you’ll go home with a special “Code On at Home” guide to continue coding puzzles, learning and fun at home. No coding experience needed and it’s a great experience to share with your kids!
