CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) voted to approve Sublette County School District #1 teacher evaluation system at its July meeting Thursday in Casper.

“The suggestive work from the Educational Basket of Goods Task Force was especially helpful. The Basket includes the components of a Wyoming education that must be available to all students. This work provided excellent suggestions towards input around processes in relation to adding, removing or adjusting areas within the Basket. The Board is very interested in supporting many of the recommendations.” said Walt Wilcox, Chairman of the State Board.

SBE Coordinator Dr. Thomas Sachse updated the board on State System of Support approval history, the “Basket of Goods and Services” Task Force work, September Joint Education Interim Committee meeting, legislative reports, and Administrative Procedures Part 5. The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) reported on the civics education survey results and Rules on Leader and Teacher Evaluation Systems. The SBE voted to postpone taking action on the Chapter 10 Rules, which includes the newly-developed computer science standards, until they receive a formal opinion from Attorney General Bridget Hill.

The SBE reconvened at board member Dan McGlade’s house for its annual retreat and discussed civics education and early childhood education. In addition, board members also received presentations from Nish Goicolea, Executive Director of the Professional Teaching Standards Board; Jim Rooks, history teacher in Jackson; Matt Strannigan, State Coordinator for We The People; and Mary Garland from the Ellbogen Foundation.

The next board meeting is scheduled for September 19-20 in Laramie. For more information about the SBE and its mission, visit https://edu.wyoming.gov/board, or follow the SBE on Twitter @WYStateBoardEd
